There are so many Brides out there who have NO CLUE what the heck a Flat Lay is....so this one is for all our photographer friends out there who are either beginners to photographer or just despise doing flat Lays and need a little creative inspiration, don't worry we got your back!

If you have not the faintest idea what a Flat Lay is, here is a simple break down for you. A Flat Lay is a photo of the brides and/or grooms most special and memorable pieces of their wedding day. This photo is where you create an artistic memory shot from above and FLAT (get it) to the floor. You can get so creative with them. We will give you a list to send to Brides before their big day of what they need (for free) and some links to certain products or ideas on where to find Flat Lay products at a lower cost for those whom are just starting out. Keep reading for all our Tips and Tricks.

Sometimes You Have To Work With What You Got

There are going to be brides that forget their flat lay box or misplace it during their wedding day. This is when you have to get REALLY creative. In this photo we shot at Fredrick Meyer Gardens in Michigan and our beautiful bride had forgotten her box. We told her not to worry and asked her if anyone had an Invitation on them, when no one did we waited until a few guests had arrived and got whatever invite we could get our hands on. We than placed a couple pedals from the Brides Bouquet (asked her if that is okay) placed some ribbon from the table decor and used our own velvet box and spool with ribbon (good to bring your own back ups). And viola, you have achieved a simple and elegant flat lay.

Too Many Choices

Sometimes you are going to have invites with a back side OR Save the dates and Invites that look better separated than together. For Sara and Lorenzo we had lots of options (Picture below of their other Flat Lay's). It is best for these circumstances to keep it as simple a possible and separate. We found some flowers outside the venue (Ask the Venue if this is okay) and placed them around each Invite with some ribbon. You can have the ring box or take the ring box away the choices are endless but KEEP IT SIMPLE whenever you face having too many decisions or if you are in a rush for time.

When You Only Have The Rings

Worst case scenario here, but it happens!! In a moment like this DON'T PANIC it is not the end of the world. This is how you can make a beautiful Flat Lay with just the rings alone. In Nick and Elise's Wedding we took decor from the reception, found some flowers on the farm (venue) , took out our handy dandy ribbon and places the rings overlapping one another. But here is the big trick to make it look eye catching. Find a place to put the rings somewhere that has dimension. This is was staircase going into the barn, just get creative and have FUN!

Get Close Up Shots & Be Creative

Let's not forget to get multiple shots of that Flat Lay you worked so hard on! Get all the angles and close up shots that you can. Sometimes is can be fun to add dimension to the Invites and put one up higher than another by places a box or Flat Lay block underneath (will list items below that were used in images that were provided by photographer). Use the ceremony sand around the invite or in Abbi and Zack's case, ceremony coffee beans (cute story behind that). The amount of options that surround you are limitless use that imagination, mess around and enjoy the process.

Remember The Grooms

When Flat Lay's first came about it was usually just about the Brides and adding the grooms wedding band to the image but now Groom Flat Lay's are becoming very popular and can be a lot of fun to capture. The nice thing about these photos at that there is not near as much to it. All you need to have are the Grooms band, tie or bow tie, cologne and shoes. If they have cuff links and a watch and socks, you can implement those as well. Try not to over due it...there is no need for ribbon.

Last but certainly not least...BE YOURSELF. You will find your own creative ideas along the way that make your Flat Lay's one of a kind, but we hope these helpful tips can guide you to becoming a pro at Wedding Flat Lay's.
